Intercourse with the Wife after Masturbation during a Ramadan Fast

Question

While observing a Ramadan fast, Zayd deliberately brought about ejaculation by moving his organ with his hand. Then, thinking that the fast had been broken, he deliberately had intercourse with his wife, and also ate and drank. Is kaffara obligatory for Zayd or not? From indications on the wife’s part it became clear that at first she was not willing, but did not hold to her insistence; rather, she gave Zayd the opportunity, yielding slightly, out of fear of Zayd. Is qada or kaffara obligatory for the wife?

Answer

Had he had intercourse while in the state of a Ramadan fast, kaffara would have been binding on him. But he had already ended the Ramadan fast earlier, because of which qada became obligatory. Intercourse in such a state does not make kaffara binding on him; his wife, however, is obliged to make both qada and kaffara (“Radd al-Muhtar”, vol. 2, p. 108).
