Asr Begun in the Complete Time and Finished in the Deficient Time
Question
The cause of the obligation (sabab al-wujub) of prayer is the part [of the time] adjoining its performance (juz’ muttasil bi-l-ada’). On this basis the Hanafi scholars say that if a person began the Asr prayer in the disliked time and then the sun set during the prayer, his prayer is valid, because he performed it as it became obligatory. What we now wish to ask is: if a person begins the Asr prayer in the complete (kamil) time, and after he has made the niyya and begun, the deficient (naqis)
Answer
This prayer of his is valid. Your doubt and its answer are given in “Sharh Munyat al-Musalli” (p. 247): [ar]قَدْ يُقَالُ: فَيَنْبَغِي أَنَّهُ لَوْ شَرَعَ فِيهَا أَوَّلَ الْوَقْتِ قَبْلَ الِاصْفِرَارِ ثُمَّ اصْفَرَّتْ وَهُوَ فِي خِلَالِهَا أَنْ تَفْسُدَ لِعُرُوضِ النُّقْصَانِ عَلَى مَا وَجَبَ بِالسَّبَبِ الْكَامِلِ.
