The Asr Prayer at One Shadow-Length

Question

Zayd is the imam in an Ahl-e Hadith mosque, although Zayd himself is a Hanafi. But because he is the imam in an Ahl-e Hadith mosque, he leads the Asr prayer at the Shafi’i Asr time, which begins before the Hanafi time. Now if Zayd, after leading the prayer, repeats the Asr prayer again alone at the Hanafi time, what is the ruling on Zayd’s prayer and on the prayer of the Ahl-e Hadith? Should Zayd repeat the prayer or not?

Answer

The preferred (mukhtar) view, on which the fatwa is given (mufta bih), is indeed that the time of Asr begins at two shadow-lengths (mithlayn); but there is also another view, that it begins right after one shadow-length (mithl), and a prayer performed at that time need not be repeated.
