The Asr Prayer Before Two Shadow-Lengths
Question
These days sunset here is at half past six. If in the mosque the Asr adhan is at half past four and the congregation at a quarter to five, will both this adhan and the Asr congregation be considered, according to Hanafi fiqh, to have taken place before the time, so that both must be repeated (wajib al-i’ada), or will only the adhan be considered to have been given before the time? And will the Asr prayer be valid or not?
Answer
If the Asr congregation took place at two shadow-lengths (mithlayn), it is not repeated, by agreement. If the adhan was given somewhat earlier, the congregation need not be repeated on that account. A congregation held somewhat before two shadow-lengths but after one shadow-length (mithl) is likewise not repeated according to one view.
