The Asr Prayer at One Shadow-Length, and an Oath of Talaq About Praying Zuhr on Time
Question
Zayd performed the Asr prayer when [the shadow] had reached one shadow-length (mithl), apart from the original shadow (fay’ al-zawal). Zayd is a follower (muqallid) of Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀. Is his prayer valid, or must it be repeated? If the prayer is valid, this means that it is the time of Asr and the time of Zuhr has passed. Now if Umar says to his wife, “If I pray today’s Zuhr as ada’ (on time)
Answer
For the Hanafis, according to the view of the Sahibayn (the two students of Imam Abu Hanifa), this prayer need not be repeated; the prayer is valid. Imam al-Tahtawi ﵀ said: [ar]وَبِقَوْلِهِمَا نَأْخُذُ[/ar] “We adopt their view.” According to the Greatest Imam (Imam A’zam)
