Supplication after the Funeral Prayer

Question

What do you write about supplication after the funeral prayer? In the “al-Falah” programme from Lahore it was said that there is no harm in making supplication after the funeral prayer, and the narration was cited: [ar]إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ فَأَخْلِصُوا لَهُ الدُّعَاءَ[/ar] “When you have prayed over the deceased, make the supplication for him sincerely” (Sunan Abi Dawud, vol. 2, p. 456).

Answer

In the authoritative book of Hanafi fiqh, “Khulasat al-Fatawa”, it is explicitly stated that after finishing the funeral prayer one should not stay there for supplication; the same is in “Mirqat”, the commentary on “Mishkat”. The funeral prayer is in reality itself a supplication; a separate supplication after it is not established.
