Raising the Hands in Various Supplications
Question
There are three ways of making supplication (du‘a): with the hands spread out; without spreading the hands — with the tongue only; or with the heart only. Please inform us of the occasions, times and rules for each of the three ways.
Answer
After the prayers, supplicating with raised hands is generally what has been transmitted. At various times — morning and evening, at night, for example when entering the mosque, when leaving [it], when buying an animal, after eating, when lying down — [supplication] without raising the hands has been transmitted; and in the heart — at all times.
