A resident and a traveller following a travelling imam
Question
(1) How should a resident (muqim) praying behind a travelling imam make his intention (niyya)? A resident who caught one rak'a with the imam — how should he complete his remaining three or two rak'as, and what is the method of performing them? (2) A travelling follower (muqtadi), praying behind a travelling imam, made the intention for four rak'as, thinking that the imam was not a traveller but a resident. Then this same traveller (who had intended four rak'as)
Answer
(1) He should make the intention thus: “I am praying such-and-such a time's prayer behind the imam for Allah.” If it is a four-rak'a prayer and he caught one rak'a behind the imam, then after the imam's salam he should stand, recite the thana', al-Fatiha and a sura, and after ruku' and sajda sit (qa'da)
