Salawat upon Muhammad ﷺ at each tarwiha
Question
If, after four rak‘as of the tarawih prayer, a person does not say the salat upon Muhammad ﷺ aloud, but quietly recites tasbih and the salawat that is recited in the prayer after the tashahhud — what is the ruling on speaking ill of such a person and not praying behind him? Does this person deserve blame or not? And what is the ruling on regarding “al-salatu ‘ala Muhammad” ﷺ as necessary and saying that it is established in the Shari‘a from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?
Answer
After every four rak‘as of tarawih one is free to sit silently, or to recite tasbih, salawat, the Qur’an, dhikr and the like, or to pray nafl individually; none of these is binding. The people of Makka perform tawaf at that time: [ar]يجلس ندبًا بين كل أربعة بقدرها، وكذا بين الخامسة والوتر، ويخيرون بين تسبيح وقراءة وسكوت وصلاة فرادى[/ar] “As a recommended act (nadban)
