The Ruling on Shabina
Question
There is a building in whose various rooms the Qur’an is being recited simultaneously in nafl prayer: for example, in one room juz’ 1 to juz’ 10 is being recited, then in another room juz’ 11 to juz’ 20, then in a third room juz’ 21 to juz’ 30. Will [the term] “shabina” (the recitation of the whole Qur’an in one night) apply to this or not? (2) What is the definition of shabina, and what is its method according to the sunna?
Answer
(1) If the imam recites calmly and with sincerity, and the muqtadis listen eagerly for the sake of reward, then it is not prohibited, and it does not fall under the commonly known shabina. (2) By custom, completing one [whole] Qur’an in one night is called shabina.
