How should one who did not pray the fard of ‘isha’ in congregation pray tarawih and witr?
Question
May a person who was unable to pray the fard prayer of ‘isha’ perform tarawih and witr in congregation or not? For nowadays in Ramadan many people come to the mosque late because of an excuse, and the congregation of the fard prayer takes place before they arrive; so such a person will pray the fard separately and join the congregation for tarawih and witr.
Answer
According to Imam A‘zam ﵀, witr is an independent prayer, [and] its congregation follows the congregation of ‘isha’. A person who could not take part in the congregation of the fard of ‘isha’ may take part in the congregation of witr.
