Making up two rak‘as of nafl with four rak‘as, or the reverse
Question
(a) If a person began praying many rak‘as of prayer two rak‘as at a time but broke [them] off, is it valid if he makes them up (qada’) at one time with the intention of four at a time, or eight at a time? (b) Likewise, if he prayed four [rak‘as] of nafl or of non-emphasized sunna together, but afterwards their invalidity (fasad) became apparent; or he made a vow (nadhr) of a four-rak‘a prayer but performed it two [rak‘as] at a time — is this correct or not? (c)
Answer
(a) It is better to make up two [rak‘as] at a time separately; four at a time is also valid, and at night six at a time and eight at a time are also valid. (b) In this case it is better to pray four at a time; two at a time is also correct. (c) In the case asked about, there is no qada’ for the emphasized sunna. As for tarawih, he should make it up (qada’)
