Nafl prayer in the darkness of the night

Question

Is it permissible to pray a nafl prayer in the dark — for example, may one pray the tahajjud prayer in the dark in the mosque or at home?

Answer

It is found in the noble hadith that Hadrat ‘A’isha ﵂ saw at night that the bed was empty — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not there — and she went searching for him; [he] was praying the tahajjud prayer in the mosque in the dark. This hadith is mentioned in “Abu Dawud”, among the books of the Sihah.
