Errors in the vowel marks: fatha, kasra and damma
Question
The imam of the Friday mosque here often recites a damma in place of a fatha, a fatha in place of a damma, and a kasra in place of a fatha. For example, in Surah al-Hashr, in “لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ لَّرَأَيْتَهُۥ” (59:21), he recites a damma instead of the fatha on the letter “ت”; likewise in Surah al-Zalzala, in “أَشْتَاتًا لِّيُرَوْا۟ أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ” (99:6)
Answer
Because of these four mistakes the prayer is not one that must be repeated (not wajib al-i‘ada): they can be explained, and to save a prayer from invalidity even a far-fetched interpretation and explanation is resorted to. However, these mistakes suggest that the imam probably makes such mistakes as cannot be explained.
