The measure of recitation: fard, wajib and sunna

Question

How much recitation in the prayer is fard, how much is wajib and how much is sunna?

Answer

The measure of one verse is fard. Al-Hamd and some sura, or three verses, or one long verse is wajib. When resident (hadar), it is sunna to recite the mufassal suras: that is, in fajr and zuhr any sura from Surat al-Hujurat to the end of al-Buruj; in ‘asr and ‘isha’ from after it up to Lam yakun; and in maghrib from after it to the end.
