Taking Care to Recite the Mufassal Suras
Question
(1) What needs to be clarified is this: what is the status of reciting according to the division mentioned by the jurists — the long mufassal suras, the medium mufassal suras, the short mufassal suras? And is this ruling only for imams, or also for the munfarid (one praying alone)? (2) What is the ruling on habitually abandoning this arrangement without any excuse, or on reciting, instead of a complete surah, a few verses from the middle of a surah or one or two ruku‘s (sections of the Qur’an)
Answer
(1) I have not seen an explicit statement (tasrih) as to whether this sunna is emphasized or non-emphasized; however, the ruling for the imam and the munfarid is the same regarding the amount of recitation — as in “Sharh al-Munya” (p. 203), “al-Durr al-Mukhtar” with [the gloss of] “al-Shami” (vol. 1, p. 504), “al-Bahr al-Ra’iq” (vol. 1, p. 340) and “Maraqi al-Falah” (p. 143).
