Does the Masbuq Recite the Qunut in the Witr Prayer?

Question

The Witr prayer was being performed in congregation; a man came and joined in the last rak‘a when the imam had already gone into ruku‘. How should this man now complete his prayer? That is, should he recite the qunut in the last rak‘a or not? We were told that he need not recite it, because he caught the last rak‘a. There is also a difference of opinion about reciting the qunut: some imams say it is sunna, and according to some it is wajib.

Answer

Reciting the qunut in the third rak‘a of the Witr is wajib. In blessed Ramadan, when the imam has recited the qunut in the third rak‘a and gone into ruku‘, and at that moment some masbuq comes and joins in the ruku‘, he has caught the third rak‘a.
