Reconciling the Fatwa of Dar al-Ulum Deoband and the Text of “Ta‘lim al-Islam” on the Masbuq’s Salam
Question
Earlier I (your servant) sent an istifta’ (request for a fatwa) on this: if a masbuq mistakenly gives the salam together with the imam, in which case does this masbuq muqtadi perform sajda al-sahw — if he gave the salam to one side, or if he gave it to both sides? The honourable Mufti wrote that if the masbuq gave the salam with the imam even to one side, then this masbuq, when giving the salam of his own prayer, should perform sajda al-sahw.
Answer
In “Ta‘lim al-Islam”, part 4, there is this text: “If he gave the salam after the imam’s salam, it is wajib for him to perform sajda al-sahw at the end of his prayer.” There is no discussion in it of the salam to one or two sides, nor of whether he says the full salam, i.e. “‘alaykum wa rahmatullah”, or only “al-salam”.
