How Does a Masbuq Who Missed Three Rak‘as Complete the Rest of the Prayer?

Question

Zayd missed three rak‘as at the time of ‘Asr. When Zayd stands up after the imam has given the salam, in how many rak‘as will he add a sura after Surat al-Fatiha, and in how many rak‘as will he not add a sura?

Answer

Since Zayd caught only one rak‘a with the imam, after the imam’s salam he should pray one rak‘a with the thana’, the “al-Hamd” [the Fatiha] and a sura, then perform the qa‘da, then one rak‘a with the “al-Hamd” and a sura, then one with the “al-Hamd” only.
