A Woman Leading Tarawih
Question
If a woman is a hafiz of the Qur’an, is it proper for her, like men, [to complete] a khatm in tarawih by way of imamate and a congregation of women, or does it entail some reprehensibility in the Shari‘a? If there is some reprehensibility, will the importance and necessity of preserving [the Qur’an] memorised outweigh it — by the principle “necessities make prohibited things permissible” (الضرورات تبيح المحظورات)
Answer
[ar]وكره جماعة النساء بواحدة منهن (مراقي الفلاح). قوله: وكره جماعة النساء تحريمًا للزوم أحد المحظورين: قيام الإمام في الصف الأول وهو مكروه، أو تقدم الإمام وهو أيضًا مكروه في حقهن[/ar] “And a congregation of women [led] by one of them is disliked” (Maraqi al-Falah). His words “and a congregation of women is disliked” — [that is,] disliked tahriman (prohibitively)
