Imamate of a Person Who Takes Omens from the Qur’an
Question
Is it permissible or impermissible to take an omen by means of the Qur’an? And is the imamate of such a practitioner permissible or not? Likewise, what about taking omens by other means? And what about praying behind someone who smokes cigarettes?
Answer
To take an omen from the Noble Qur’an or any other book and then regard it as a proof of the Shari‘a and base on it a decision about truth and falsehood is not correct; it is wrong. Deciding between truth and falsehood requires proofs of the Shari‘a; but if an omen is taken merely for an inclination of the heart, there is no harm in it.
