Leaving the Imamate for Other Work
Question
I work as an imam in a certain village for fifty rupees a month, but there is no respect. Moreover, the desires of the self increase; when I am at home the nafs also stays obedient, and my heart wishes to do some free (independent) work. Now tell me, what should I do, given that I have been an imam for 12 years?
Answer
The imamate should not be made merely a means of filling one’s stomach; rather, the intention should be service of the religion, keeping the mosque populated, regularity of the congregation and the pleasure of Allah. If one cannot manage on the salary, one may take up some other, better work; you should work out your own interests yourself.
