Announcing the prayer with the sound of a gong

Question

Where the adhan cannot be heard by the people of the neighbourhood, how is it to do tathwib there with a gong — as the doorkeeper at your place strikes [it] for the lessons? That is, is it permissible or not? If not, then what is meant by ‘Allama Shami’s ﵀ words “and if it differs from that” (وإن خالف ذلك)? And if it is permissible, then it is imitation of the unbelievers. Please write in detail with references to the books.

Answer

If there is no other unobjectionable form of tathwib, then this way too is permissible, but the manner of striking should be made distinct so that there is no imitation.
