The Difference Between Reciting the Qur’an with Reflection and Without

Question

There are two men: one recites the Holy Qur’an by looking [at the mushaf], and the other is an ‘alim who has studied Arabic along with sarf and nahw (morphology and syntax). The one who recites from the mushaf receives ten good deeds (hasanat) for each letter. If he reads while [understanding] the translation, how many good deeds will he receive per letter? Secondly, how much reward does the man who is an ‘alim now receive for each letter when he recites?

Answer

Whoever recites with greater tadabbur (reflective contemplation), being mindful of the greatness of the Holy Qur’an, will receive greater reward accordingly. For tadabbur it is not enough merely for morphological forms and syntactic constructions to come to mind.
