The Marriage of Fatima ﵂ to ‘Ali ﵁

Question

The marriage (‘aqd) of Fatima ﵂ was concluded with ‘Ali ﵁, who was a paternal cousin of the noble Prophet ﷺ. It is fard for every Muslim to follow the sunna. But I have reached the age of 77, and such a marriage has never come before my eyes. Has any such marriage taken place among you?

Answer

The details of the kinships through which nikah becomes haram are set out in the Noble Qur’an, the noble hadith and the books of fiqh. A paternal cousin is not among these kinships. The noble Prophet ﷺ giving his daughter Fatima ﵂ in marriage to his paternal cousin ‘Ali ﵁ was by means of revelation (wahy).
