Marrying the Daughter of One’s Spiritual Guide
Question
In a forest, a father and son were both working. The father said to the son, “Whose disciple will you become?” The boy said, “I will become the pupil of my maternal uncle.” Then the father said, “Your maternal uncle’s daughter is in your house; since you want to become your maternal uncle’s disciple while your nikah is with his daughter, it would be better than that for you to marry your own sister.” The boy replied, “Pupil or disciple — I will become that of my maternal uncle.
Answer
Nikah with the daughter of one’s spiritual guide is permissible; she is not like a real sister. The noble Prophet ﷺ was the spiritual guide and mentor (murabbi) of ‘Ali ﵁, and Fatima ﵂, the daughter of the noble Prophet ﷺ, was in the nikah of ‘Ali ﵁. When the son gave three talaqs, the talaq became mughallaza (final).
