The Ruling on Nikah with the Stepmother’s Sister
Question
Zayd has two wives, Zaynab and Kulthum. From the first wife, Zaynab, he has a son, Khalid. The second wife, Kulthum, has a sister, Ruqayya. It should be clarified that Kulthum and Ruqayya are also half-sisters to each other. Can Khalid’s nikah be contracted with Ruqayya or not? The girl, moreover, is the stepmother’s half-sister.
Answer
Nikah with a maternal aunt is haram, but a maternal aunt is one who is the sister of one’s real mother. The sister of the stepmother — the father’s second wife — is not a maternal aunt, and nikah with her is not haram.
