Zina with One’s Wife’s Stepmother, Followed by Nikah with Her
Question
A man committed zina (fornication/adultery) with his step-mother-in-law, as a result of which she even became pregnant, and in the state of this pregnancy he contracted nikah with her. Is this nikah permissible or not? Also, is it permissible to contract nikah with one’s step-mother-in-law or not? What is the ruling of the Glorious Qur’an, the authentic hadiths and Islamic fiqh concerning such a man who committed zina with his step-mother-in-law and then contracted nikah with her in the state of pregnancy?
Answer
Committing zina is categorically haram. If zina is proven in the manner prescribed by the Shari‘a, then under an Islamic government it is obligatory to carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) for zina upon the adulterer and the adulteress.
