After the Nikah the Wife Ran Away with a Chamar Servant

Question

(1) Zayd’s nikah with the daughter of his maternal uncle took place last year; the bride’s send-off to her husband’s home had not taken place — it had been agreed that the send-off would be next year. Nine or ten months after the nikah the girl ran away with a Chamar servant of theirs (Chamars: an Indian caste of leatherworkers, regarded as low), or he took her away. After a search, four days later, the girl was found in Bahraich together with this servant.

Answer

(1) As a rule, the maintenance (nafaqa) of an adult son and his wife is not the father’s responsibility when the son is not in need and earns for himself; from this point of view, turning them out is no offence.
