A Girl Ran Away and Contracted Nikah with a Young Man

Question

A young man from one village began living with an old man and an old woman of another village. Some days later that old man died. The young man is still with that old woman. The daughter of that old woman has an adult (baligha) daughter; this girl’s parents said to the young man: “Don’t worry, we will marry our daughter to you. But you will have to wait two to four months.” The young man began to say: “If the marriage is to be done, then do it this very month.

Answer

The girl’s parents made a grave mistake: despite having settled the matter, they refused to marry her off because of their quarrel, and did not agree even when the girl drew their attention to it. The consequence of this mistake had to be borne in this way. Inna li-llah… (إنا لله…).
