The Eid Prayer Is Not Wajib for Women

Question

May a woman pray the Eid prayer in congregation or without congregation, or not? Please give a reasoned and detailed answer with references, in the light of the hadith and the Qur'an.

Answer

The Eid prayer is not wajib for women. And without congregation even men cannot pray it: Eid is [in this respect] like Jumu'a. [ar]وشرط وجوبها أي وجوب الجمعة الإقامة والذكورة[/ar] “The condition of its obligation — that is, the obligation of Jumu'a — is residence (iqama) and being male” (al-Kanz, vol. 2, p. 151).
