The legal status of the Eid prayer ground (Eidgah)
Question
There is a large local field which is considered part of a graveyard. Within this area there is a constructed Eidgah surrounded by walls and with a gate. Both the Eidgah and the graveyard share the same trustee. The entire land has been considered a waqf for centuries, and Eid prayers have been held there for centuries. There is no written waqf document; it is considered a verbal waqf. The questions are: Is this Eidgah considered a mosque in legal ruling, and do all rulings of a mosque apply to it?
Answer
The Eidgah has the ruling of a mosque only with regard to the validity of following the imam in congregational prayer. In other matters it does not have the full rulings of a mosque. For example: entering a mosque while in major ritual impurity (janabah) is prohibited, but entering the Eidgah in such a state is not prohibited.
