From which step of the minbar should the khutba be delivered? The objections against ‘Uthman ﵁
Question
From which of the three steps of the minbar should the khutba be read — from the first, the second or the third? (2) If it should be read from the second or the third, why? And if not, why? (3) If someone reads from the first, or does not consider [such] reading a sin, what fault is attributed to him? And Hazrat Abu Bakr and ‘Umar ﵄ read [the khutba] on the minbar of the Prophet’s Mosque from the second or the third [step] — was this specific to that minbar, or is the same ruling for others too?
Answer
(1–4) Reading from the third step is transmitted. Reading from the first and second steps is also not forbidden — so in Fayd al-Bari. The practice of the scholars too has been of every kind. There is no binding to any particular step such that departing from it would be forbidden.
