Listeners reciting the salawat during the khutba
Question
If during the Friday khutba the blessed name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is heard, is it wajib to recite the salawat or not? Some scholars say that one should recite it inwardly, in the heart, as [is done] when the verse is recited: [ar]إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ[/ar] “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet…” (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:56). Kindly give an answer with references to the books: is reciting the salawat good or not?
Answer
In such a state, one should recite the salawat in the heart: [ar]والصواب أن يصلي على النبي ﷺ عند سماع اسمه في نفسه. قوله: «في نفسه» بأن يسمع نفسه أو يصحح الحروف، فإنهم فسروه به، وعن أبي يوسف: قلبًا، ائتمارًا لأمري الإنصات والصلاة عليه ﷺ، كما في الكرماني اهـ الشامي.[/ar] “What is correct is that he invokes blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ inwardly upon hearing his name.
