The Basis for the Two Adhans of Jumu'a
Question
On the day of Jumu'a there is the first adhan and the second, the adhan of the khutba. Please give the basis for these two adhans: should there be two adhans or one?
Answer
At first there was only one adhan for Jumu'a; when the gathering grew large, two adhans began to be given by the order of none other than one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (al-khulafa' al-rashidun) (so in the commentary on al-Bukhari).
