Responding to the Adhan before the Khutba
Question
At the time of the second adhan of Jumu'a, when the imam stands for the khutba, is it permissible to respond to the adhan and to make du'a, or not? Some scholars forbid it and some permit it. In the margin of al-Hidaya, 'Abd al-Hayy refutes the statement of al-Durr al-Mukhtar. Kindly grant a fatwa with references to the books: which opinion is correct?
Answer
[ar]وفي المجتبى في ثمانية مواضع إذا سمع الأذان لا يجيب: في الصلاة، واستماع خطبة الجمعة[/ar] “And in al-Mujtaba: in eight situations, one who hears the adhan does not respond: in the prayer, while listening to the Jumu'a khutba…” (al-Bahr al-Ra'iq).
