Responding to the Adhan during the Friday Khutbah and its Evidence
Question
I am a Muslim of the Hanafi school and serve as the secretary and administrator of the city’s main mosque. I would like clarification regarding the Friday adhan: should its words be repeated (responded to) or not? According to Imam Abu Hanifa, once the imam comes out for the khutbah, speaking and performing voluntary prayers become prohibited. However, according to his two students (Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad), speaking becomes prohibited only when the imam actually begins the khutbah.
Answer
Those scholars who consider responding to the adhan delivered before the imam on the pulpit permissible or obligatory rely on the narration of Mu‘awiyah (RA), who reportedly repeated the adhan while on the pulpit and stated that the Prophet ﷺ also used to respond to it. This narration is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari. Mawlana ‘Abd al-Hayy also used it as evidence.
