Prayer on Friday at the Time of the Sun’s Istiwa’ (Zenith)

Question

During blessed Ramadan it is often seen that on Friday, before the adhan of the Jumu‘a prayer, at the time of istiwa’ (zenith) and zawal, people keep praying nafl prayers. Is it correct to pray these nafls? And is there permission for them on Friday?

Answer

At the very moment of the sun’s istiwa’ on Friday, according to the view of Imam Abu Yusuf ﵀, praying nafls is correct without karaha (disapproval); according to Imam A‘zam ﵀ and Imam Muhammad ﵀, however, it is makruh, and this is the preferred (rajih) view. So it is in “al-Ghunya”, p. 235.
