Ruling on the Time of Zenith on Friday

Question

Is it permissible to perform voluntary prayers at the time when the sun is directly overhead (zenith) on Friday?

Answer

At the exact time of zenith (istiwa) it is disliked (makruh) to begin any prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary. According to Imam Abu Yusuf, on Friday performing voluntary prayers at that time is not disliked. In al-Durr al-Mukhtar it states: “It is prohibitively disliked (makruh tahrimi)
