The funeral prayer at the place of the ta‘ziyas

Question

A man died on the day of ‘Ashura’ who used to pray and belonged to Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a. His heirs did not perform the funeral prayer at the designated place for janazas; they took the janaza to the place where the ta‘ziyas (Shi‘i replicas of Imam Husayn’s tomb carried out in Muharram) had been brought out, and where the Shi‘a were performing mourning rites. Some of them came and joined the janaza, and the funeral prayer was led by [an imam of] Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a.

Answer

They did wrong, and they should repent of this act. When the prayer could have been performed elsewhere, and there was also a strong hope of the participation of a large gathering, what need was there to go knowingly to a place of sin and depravity (fisq wa fujur)?
