Remuneration for reciting and blowing over a boil
Question
Question: (1) Zayd recites and blows over a boil (furuncle) by some method — with a verse or with lower (black) magic — he cuts away the lump (?), and the patient gets relief, though some do not. After this recitation with blowing Zayd takes two to two and a quarter annas (a coin worth 1/16 of a rupee) from the patient by way of a sweet offering. In this way a considerable sum accumulates, and it is spent on the needs of the mosque, i.e. on ewers, prayer mats, oil, mat-rows, or construction and the like.
Answer
(1, 2) If he blows over the patient while reciting a Qur’anic verse and takes something in exchange for it, this is proper. Further, it is also permissible for him to give it wherever he wishes — to the mosque or to the madrasa — and spending it is proper in both places, the mosque and the madrasa.
