The fee for officiating a nikah

Question: Those who officiate a nikah take a rupee, a rupee and a quarter and the like for officiating it. Is this permissible according to the Shari‘a or not?

If the person officiating the nikah is only one, and there is no one else, then it is not permissible for him to take a fee. If there are others, then he has the option to fix a fee and take it.
