Taking payment for reciting Qur’anic verses to cure a sick person
Question
Question: Is it permissible or not to hold a collective Qur’an recitation for recovery from some illness, when money is also taken? Some people declare it permissible to take money by calling it treatment, and they say that it falls under the category of treatment and is not for isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased).
Answer
If treatment is the aim and it is established by experience that reciting in this way brings about a cure, then taking payment for it is proper. Some Companions took payment for reciting for the sake of a cure, and the Prophet ﷺ declared it proper. This noble hadith is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari (Kitab al-Tibb, Bab al-Ruqa bi-Fatihat al-Kitab, p. 854).
