A Sick Person Having Hajj Badal Performed on His Behalf
Question
Zayd is wealthy and Hajj is fard upon him, but he suffers from a hernia (descent of the intestine) and is ill; his eyesight is also weak. Zayd wants Hajj badal to be performed for him. Please tell us: in such a case will Zayd's Hajj badal be valid or not?
Answer
If, because of illness, Zayd cannot go himself and perform the pillars (arkan) of Hajj, then it is permissible for him to send someone on his behalf and have Hajj badal performed. But if Zayd later becomes able to perform Hajj himself, it will be necessary (lazim) for him to perform it himself, and this Hajj badal will not suffice.
