Voicing the Intention for Hajj and ‘Umra
Question
The Islamic University of Madinah (Madrasa Jami‘a Islamiyya, Madina Munawwara) has published a book entitled “Hajj and ‘Umra”, in which the necessary rulings of Hajj and ‘Umra are set out. Having studied it carefully, we found a difficulty concerning one mas’ala, the details of which are as follows. On pages (45–46–47–48) of the above-mentioned book the detailed account of Hajj and ‘Umra begins. First of all the ruling on the intention (niyya)
Answer
It is true that saying words with the tongue for the intention of prayer is not transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ. In reality, the intention (niyya) is the name for the resolve of the heart. There are many people who are constantly beset by a throng of thoughts and whisperings (waswasa)
