The Difference Between a Maqbul Hajj and a Mabrur Hajj
Question
What is the difference between a mabrur Hajj and a maqbul Hajj? Are the words “maqbul” and “mabrur” synonyms or opposites? If they are opposites, what is the difference between them? And can a voluntary (nafl) Hajj be mabrur and maqbul or not?
Answer
Between “maqbul” (accepted) and “mabrur” there is the relation of partial overlap (‘umum khusus min wajh). Mabrur is a Hajj in which no violation (jinaya) was committed that would entail a dam or a kaffara; maqbul is one that Allah Most High accepts. Sometimes it happens that a Hajj is accepted despite a violation: then it is maqbul but not mabrur.
