Explanation of the “Greater Hajj” (Hajj Akbar)
Question
What is the definition of the “Greater Hajj” (Hajj Akbar), and what is its reality?
Answer
‘Umra is called the “Lesser Hajj” (Hajj Asghar), while the Hajj that includes tawaf, the sacrifice (nahr), shaving (halq) and stoning (rami) is called the “Greater Hajj” (Hajj Akbar). This also occurs at the beginning of Surat al-Tawba: “the Day of the Greater Hajj” (يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ; Surah al-Tawba, 9:3).
