Circumcision of an adult

Question

Zayd was still a minor when his father died. Because there was no guardian, circumcision could not be done. Now Zayd is 25 years old and the skin has become hard, but Zayd says that he is now like a circumcised person. In such a case, is it necessary to have circumcision done or not?

Answer

Circumcision is an emphasized sunna and among the distinctive rites (sha‘a’ir) of Islam. Without a severe excuse it does not lapse even from an adult. However, since Zayd is like a circumcised person, and moreover the skin too has become hard, it may lapse out of necessity.
