The origin of circumcision: which prophets were born circumcised?

Question

Circumcision is the sunna of Ibrahim. Did it begin with Hazrat Ibrahim ﵇, or has it been practised from before him? If from before, then with which prophet did this sunna begin? And was Hazrat Adam ﵇ circumcised or not? Likewise (regarding) all the prophets ﵈: if all the prophets ﵈ were (circumcised), were they born circumcised by the hand of (divine) power, or were they circumcised afterwards? And if it was legislated from Hazrat Ibrahim ﵇, then what is to be said about the persons of the earlier prophets ﵈?

Answer

[ar]وقال القرطبي: وفي الموطأ وغيره عن يحيى بن سعيد أنه سمع سعيد بن المسيب يقول: إبراهيم ﵇ أول من اختتن[/ar] “Al-Qurtubi said: ‘In the Muwatta’ and elsewhere (it is narrated) from Yahya ibn Sa‘id that he heard Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib ﵀ say: «Ibrahim ﵇ was the first to be circumcised»’…” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, vol. 1, p. 166).
