The Ruling on “Tafhim al-Qur’an” and the Shar‘i Limit of the Beard
Question
[ar]وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦٓ[/ar] “And never pray over any one of them who has died, nor stand at his grave” (Surah al-Tawba, 9:84). In the commentary on this verse, Sayyid Abul A‘la Mawdudi wrote in his tafsir “Tafhim al-Qur’an” that from it the following ruling is derived: the funeral prayer of the fasiqs (transgressors), the fajirs (profligates) and those notorious for fisq will not be performed.
Answer
(1) The prayer is fard ‘ayn (an individual obligation); one who does not pray is a grave sinner, yet his funeral prayer too is necessary.
